There has been some discussion of the connection between materialism and its effects on the environment here on the board. I'm glad to see you put up a category for the environment! No doubt of the connection between the way we consume and the environment.

I couldn't agree more! This is the big semi-hidden issue, nobody really wants to talk about. But with the credit crunch pressing down on so many people now, maybe people are more ready to consider less spending on things and more savings.

I think the question is are people willing to accept there are finite resources available for the production of goods and with a growing demand globally this is becoming an increasingly relevant issue as it relates to the environment. It will probably take a crisis like global warming to get people's attention.

I think you are right blueeagle. It will probably take a crisis for people to question their drive to consume. Many people I know believe that resources are unlimited and there is no real reason to be concerned.

Its hard to believe some people don't believe global warming and humans aren't playing a role, but they do.
I've been a pretty materialistic person my whole life. It very hard for me not to want things., nice things. I know I consume and waste more than most.

I'm pretty skeptical about our ability to change the course of global warming. I think most of the ideas that are being proposed will have little real impact. I think it will take real technical innovation.

I'm not sure we can change the course of global warming either, I certainly believe we should try. What I hope is that global warming serves as a successful example that we as humans effect the earth and need to always factor in the impact we have on the environment...be proactive instead of reactive.
