"Like middle-class families everywhere, the Mendells, Steins, and the Wrights judged their own financial health by how they thought their neighbors were doing. How wrong their were."

What a classic situation! We probably all do this to some degree, likely a lot. Comparing, contrasting, holding others up as markers for how and where we need to be, what things need to look like and so forth. But how little we know what is going on behind the scenes with other people, in their lives.

I've read in several places here on the site about how we as humans beings are driven by "objective" drives...how we feel we stack up against others in our peer group, our world. This article really bring this to life!
