I really believe what this author is saying here. It's all about working to be "mindful" in life, increasingly aware and conscious. So many live their lives on autopilot, driven by impulse. I also agree it's important to learn healthy self-care, not habits that numb us out.

How can greater self-awareness be a bad thing? A practice like yoga and meditation is a wonderful way to cultivate daily mindfulness.

Honestly...

It wasn't till recently that my purchases reflected my values.
I'm 27 and a bachelor, with no end in sight. I just recently started customizing my bedroom. I loved all kinds of oriental decorations, that sort of thing. But I've always rented from someone else, meaning that my only space was the bedroom itself. It hasn't been till recently that I've felt comfortable making ANY space my own.
Now I have my "personalized space". I feel better when I'm in my space now. It's not the exhaustion of stumbling in after another grueling day at the office or on the road. I walk in, flip on the light, and it's as if my room smiles at me and bids me, "welcome home, Joe!"
Is this called Feng Shui? I don't know. I call it, "Joe Home"....

Love your post joeboo. The concept of purchases reflecting values is certainly worth considering. For a person to really do so can be scary and require bravery. I know in my case, at least historically, it hasn't always been a pretty picture, certainly out of line with the way I see myself.

You know, I think most people are almost completely unaware of how their spending practices DON'T reflect their values. It sure seems like money is this thing you carry in your pocket, and you never quite have enough of it, and the world throws curve balls at you and basically deprives you of it, FORCING you to spend it on "necessities" and "emergencies". The idea that it can reflect your values....well, that's a new one on me too!

Thanks for your comment, by the way! :)

I think that we move at a pace in this country that almost forces us into autopilot. We move through life way too often in a mindless kind of way. It takes real dedication to break out of this way of living. I don't do yoga but can see the benefit.

I love my yoga. Thanks for the article. So much of yoga is related to concentration and awareness. I find I do carry it over into my life.
